Cannot boot off external hdd?

I have an acer aspire 5336. The oem harddrive is destroyed but I have an external USB hdd. I have a windows xp install cd and have successfully installed xp on my external hdd but when it boots it shows the windows starting screen for about 3 seconds then blue screens stop:0x0000007B (0xF78A2528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). I was reading on some forums about this and found out it was caused by window reinitializing all USB devices so it crashes. I also found out you can change how windows initializes it's USB devices so it can successfully boot windows from an external USB hdd. Please can someone tell me how to do this
