How to become an artist?

im 17 and ive never taken a drawing class in my life. i am ok on drawing and i have been complimented before on it. idealy id like to become a graphic novelist but i wouldnt mind another job. i was thinking of switching to some drawing classes next year and maybe taking some over the summer. i guess my question is, have i started too late? please share experiences if you have a job in "drawing"
