Why is it taking so long to install Skype?

My Skype suddenly stopped working so I followed the Skype forum instructions to uninstall and reinstall; however, I have got as far as the Skype Install "initialising download" screen but it's been there for 3 hours yet the progress bar has gained an iota! Can anyone help please?
